To get children to learn - not merely teach them
To spread proper education in the villages around Hutmura with a special focus on the poorer sections of the society who cannot afford, or are reluctant to spend for their children’s education
To have a curriculum with emphasis on English, - written as well as spoken, that will enable the students to compete with others for seeking higher education
To develop the appreciation for education and urge for getting educated in the minds of little children
Curriculum and activities
Building a strong foundation during early elementary years is important to ensure that children are successful. We strive to equip young children with a love for learning and build a strong base that will help them as they transition to mandatory enrollment in government-run schools.
Continuing Education for Teachers
I found that the local housewives were eager to learn and teach, putting their education to good use while serving the community. I train the teachers first and make them ready to speak in English with the children. Now, we have a staff of nearly 10 teachers.
About me
I have been an educator all my life - from teaching Economics to 11th grade students to elementary school children for several years in Orissa. I was contemplating my life after retirement. I was tired of the easy-going life in Kolkata/Bangalore. I wished to do something constructive for the society such that I get a sense of fulfillment and happiness. Thus was born the school that bears my mother's name.

Given the high levels of poverty in Hutmura, the parents can hardly afford a quality education. My goal is to provide a high standard of education at little to no cost. The school is a self-funded venture. Currently, the school has an enrollment of nearly 150 children and it costs nearly Re. 700,000/year ($8000) to run the school. A third of the children are too poor to afford the school and entirely supported (books, uniform, supplies) by generous support from friends and family that supplement my personal investment.
